Linebacker Jay Higgins will replace Noah Shannon at Iowa’s Big Ten Media Day due to Shannon’s involvement in an ongoing NCAA gambling investigation.

That’s according to a news release issued Wednesday by the University of Iowa Athletic Department. Shannon was quoted as saying while it was an honor to be selected to appear at Media Day, he asked head coach Kirk Ferentz to replace him since the NCAA gambling review is still ongoing and representing the school at this time wouldn’t feel “right” to him.

Ferentz says Shannon’s decision to pull himself from the media event speaks highly of his character and the fact that he is always willing to put the team first.

Higgins, a native of Indianapolis, enters his fourth year in the Hawkeye football program. He totaled 39 tackles (20 solo) last year playing behind consensus All-American Jack Campbell, and has played in 31 games over his first three seasons.

Big Ten Media Day for Iowa is next Wednesday in Indianapolis.
