Five suspects face felony rioting charges after an incident police say was tied to an Independence Day shooting on Iowa City’s west side.

Iowa City Police were called to a report of a gunshot victim on the 2600 block of Westwinds Drive just after 1am on July 4th. Multiple surveillance videos taken from the scene reportedly show a group of 10-15 people who assembled to use unlawful force against another person. Five people allegedly identified in the video include 20-year-old Spirit Nigeria Hall-Carpenter of Shady Glen Court, 20-year-old Cam’ron Wortham of the Pheasant Ridge Apartments, 19-year-old Cora Reed of Atalissa, 20-year-old Delaney Gingerich of The Quarters Apartments on Highway 6 East, and 19-year-old Basel Elhindi of Walden Road.

Police say the videos show the suspects assaulting a female who was not part of the group. The alleged victim suffered bruising and swelling to her face.

All five suspects are charged with Participating in a Riot, a Class D Felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison. Hall-Carpenter and Reed face additional charges of Assault Causing Bodily Injury, an Aggravated Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of two years in jail.

In an unrelated incident, Washington County dispatch records show Hall-Carpenter and a juvenile were charged with illegally entering the gaming floor of the Riverside Casino while underage at 4:30 last Sunday morning.
