A local legend has lost his health battles after leaving his mark on the legal world, the dining community, and University of Iowa’s men’s and women’s basketball programs.

Randy Larson passed away at the age of 67 over the weekend.

Pat Harty of Hawk Fanatic reports Larson came to Iowa City to attend law school at the University of Iowa and started practicing law in 1982, specializing in personal injury for plaintiffs, and criminal defense.

He defended numerous University of Iowa student-athletes over the years, and he also represented the family of former Iowa basketball player Chris Street in its suit against Johnson County and the driver of a snowplow that had collided with Street’s car, killing the emerging star on Jan. 19, 1993, midway through his junior season.

Larson started his restaurant career when he became co-owner of the Airliner in 1992. He also ran Bob’s Your Uncle in Iowa City and owned Monica’s on the Coralville Strip.

Larson’s sports passions were golf and basketball. He and former University of Iowa coach Tom Davis started the Prime Time League in 1987 as a way for UI players to get extra experience playing with former and future college players.  He also established the Game Time League for Iowa women’s basketball players.

Head Men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery said in a statement, “Randy was an Iowa City legend and will be dearly missed.”
