An Iowa City man with two prior domestic abuse convictions is accused of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend.

Police say 45-year-old Tavoris Williams and the woman have been dating for 8 months, and she is 18 weeks pregnant with their child.  Thursday night at their Dubuque Street apartment, Williams allegedly threw a speaker at the woman, injuring her shoulder. He then reportedly grabbed her hair and punched her repeatedly on the side of her face.

The woman was able to pick up a knife and defend herself, causing a laceration to Williams’ leg. He left the residence before officers arrived.

A check of Williams’ criminal record showed domestic abuse convictions in Johnson County from August 2018 and April 2019.

Williams was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd offense, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
