An Iowa City woman was arrested over the weekend after allegedly assaulting the man she shares a child with.

Officers were alerted to a physical domestic incident at 501 Southgate Sunday morning around 11:45. Upon arrival, the victim was located near the scene and during an interview learned that he had been physically assaulted by 34-year-old Dchayla Tarver, whose address was listed as Shelter House.  Tarver, the victim’s ex-girlfriend, allegedly followed him to the 501 building, started arguing with him, and struck him several times in the face. Officers noted bleeding scratches on the man’s neck.

The ex-boyfriend reportedly said that Tarver had been drinking and routinely abuses him when she does so.  Several employees at 501 witnessed the incident and said that Tarver appeared to be the primary aggressor and that her ex-boyfriend did not provoke her.  Tarver was not on scene when officers arrived.

The parties share a child together and had cohabitated intimately within the past year.

Tarver was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted. She appeared before Judge Deborah Minot on Monday and was released on her own recognizance pending future court dates.
