The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Muscatine woman they say was driving almost 100 miles per hour with four children in her car while under the influence of Xanax.

26-year-old Courtney Kahly of Mulberry Avenue was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 12:45 Friday morning. The sheriff’s office says Kahly passed a deputy on Highway 218 just north of the Highway 1 exit around 9:45 Thursday night. She was allegedly driving her 2020 Hyundai Palisade Limited at 98 miles per hour on the rumble strips with her turn signal and windshield wipers activated, despite there being no precipitation present.

Once pulled over, Kahly reportedly showed signs of extreme intoxication despite registering a 0.00 on breath testing. She allegedly admitted to taking a “full bar” of Xanax throughout the day.

Deputies say Kahly’s four children…ages seven, six and two years and four months…were inside the car at the time. She was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated and four counts of Child Endangerment. If convicted on all five charges, Kahly faces a maximum of nine years behind bars.

Kahly faces another potential 30 day jail sentence on a 5th Degree Criminal Mischief charge after deputies say she ripped down the curtain that divides the booking room from the changing room at the Johnson County Jail just before 1:15 Friday morning.
