An Iowa City man was arrested this week after an alleged 4th of July assault on his wife.
The incident occurred that evening at the Town and Campus Apartment residence of 36-year-old Brandon Mitchell. Officers met with both parties involved on the scene and discovered that Mitchell allegedly put hands on the woman, strangling her by pushing her up against the wall and holding her neck, before pushing her head down the wall of their bedroom.
Mitchell’s wife said she wasn’t able to breathe during the incident.
Police reportedly noted visible marks on the woman consistent with the narrative. A witness alleged that Mitchell was intoxicated when he assaulted his wife, before she was able to fend herself off him with a table.
Mitchell’s record shows 4 different domestic convictions for domestic abuse, three of them felonies, in the last four years. The couple have been involved with each other for five years and married for two.
Mitchell is in the Johnson County Jail, facing charges of Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or Subsequent Offense, and Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
The Iowa Department of Corrections charged Mitchell with a probation violation Wednesday because of the incident, and recommended his bond be set at $5000.
