Second suspect accused of stealing fireworks from Iowa City sales tent

A second suspect has been charged after police say he and an accomplice pushed a shopping cart full of stolen fireworks several blocks away from the tent where they were being sold.

59-year-old Curtis Seals of Cross Park Avenue was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 8:15 Thursday morning. Iowa City Police say just before 12:30am on June 24th they found Seals and 40-year-old Calvin Edwards…also of Cross Park Avenue…pushing a shopping cart full of fireworks through a parking lot near the intersection of Southgate Avenue and Keokuk Street.  The two are accused of forcing their way inside the nearby fireworks sales tent in the Waterfront Hy-Vee parking lot and taking a shopping cart full of merchandise. The tent had been closed for business since 9pm.

The total value of the stolen fireworks is listed at $1,113.73.

Seals and Edwards are each charged with 3rd Degree Burglary and 3rd Degree Theft. If convicted on both charges, they each face a maximum of seven years in prison.
