The city of North Liberty has cited both of the city’s fireworks retailers for allegedly selling to minors.

According to a news release from the city, the North Liberty Police Department conducted compliance checks on consumer fireworks retailers within city limits. Both retailers reportedly sold to minors…which is illegal in Iowa…and were cited. They each face a fine of up to $805 and potential imprisonment if found guilty.

North Liberty officials say even before July, illegally-used consumer fireworks have been responsible for several grass fires and injuries, and have led to citations.

Using voluntarily provided doorbell video footage, North Liberty Police have identified a juvenile, who admitted to setting off the fireworks that set fire to the neighbor’s grass. The 17-year-old has been cited and faces a fine of up to $750.
