A Wednesday night accident on Interstate 80 in Cedar County sent an Iowa City man to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

An earlier accident was reported at approximately 1:45pm on westbound I-80 between the West Branch and Rochester Avenue exits. The Iowa State Patrol says that accident involved multiple vehicles, setting “several” semis on fire. Despite the heavy smoke and flames, the State Patrol says there were only minor injuries. The crash tied up eastbound and westbound traffic for hours.

The State Patrol added a second accident report late Wednesday night indicating that just before 5:30pm, a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee came upon slowed traffic from the earlier accident and slammed into the back of a semi trailer near the West Branch exit. The driver of the Jeep, 63-year-old Craig Benson of Iowa City, was transported to the UIHC by West Liberty ambulance. His condition has not been released.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
