The City of North Liberty has updated school zone signs and pavement markings to a 1.5-mile section of Front Street.

The updated section runs from Forevergreen Road to Zeller Street, and was done in accordance with recommendations from the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County. While the report was delivered earlier this year, North Liberty city staff waited until the summer school break to implement the recommended changes.

The changes include the school crossing location for Van Allen Elementary being moved north to the intersection of Vandello Drive and South Front Street to avoid a mid-block crossing, new speed signs being installed side-by-side with the school zone, and “End School Zone” signs being installed at appropriate locations.

The new speed signs indicate the limit in the school zone is 30 miles per hour, with it being reduced to 20 miles per hour when they are flashing.

None of the school zones or speed limits have changed. City officials note the total number of signs through the segment was reduced based on engineers’ advice that the area is over-signed, which reduces the impact of messages on drivers.
