Commuters between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids will have a little more room to roam with new lanes and a new interchange coming to Interstate 380 in the coming years.
The Gazette reports that the new five-year plan for the Iowa Department of Transportation includes funding for improvements on the interstate. They include widening the interstate to six lanes from the north ramps of the Swisher interchange to just south of U.S. Highway 30.
The plan also reconfigures the Wright Brothers Boulevard interchange to The Eastern Iowa Airport. Officials say that area is seeing a major influx of manufacturing, warehouses and homes.
Catherine Cutler is a transportation planner in the Iowa DOT’s District 6 Office in Cedar Rapids. She told the Gazette that structural work and grading for the new Wright Brothers Boulevard interchange potentially starts as soon as fall 2024, with the additional lanes project slated for 2025 or 2026.
