Planned Parenthood says it will close some of its centers in Iowa, but it will increase services at other locations to respond to increased demand for abortions, staffing shortages and rising costs.
The organization says the consolidation will allow it to provide more services. Planned Parenthood North Central States provides abortions in Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska.
The organization plans to close centers in Council Bluffs, Cedar Falls and in south Des Moines. Patients will be directed to other nearby clinics and some employees will work at more than one location. Abortion services will be expanded in Cedar Rapids; Ames; Omaha, Nebraska; and at the Susan Knapp Health Center in Des Moines.
Iowa Republicans are widely expected to attempt to pass a new law during the next session to further restrict abortion.
