Allegedly vandalizing the Old Capitol Town Center has led to an Iowa City woman’s arrest.

Police were called to the Capitol Street side of the building just after 7:45am on Saturday, June 17th for a person writing on the wall with a black-colored instrument. Arriving officers confronted the suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Ayla Marshek of South Dodge Street, who allegedly admitted she did not have the building owner’s permission to write on the wall.

The instrument used in the vandalism was determined to be black eyeliner.

Old Capitol Town Center management was unavailable at the time of the incident, but later requested charges be filed.

Marshek was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 2:30 Friday afternoon and charged with 4th Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted, she faces a maximum of one year in jail.
