A burglary suspect has been arrested after Iowa City Police say they found him pushing a shopping cart full of stolen fireworks several blocks away from the sales tent.

Officers were called to the fireworks tent outside the Waterfront Hy-Vee just before 12:30 Saturday morning for two subjects forcing their way inside and taking a shopping cart full of merchandise. The tent closed for business at 9pm.

Arriving police say they observed 40-year-old Calvin Edwards of Cross Park Avenue pushing a cart full of fireworks through a parking lot near the intersection of Southgate Avenue and Keokuk Street.  Edwards was positively identified as one of the suspects by a witness who was called to the scene.

The total value of the stolen fireworks is listed at $1,113.73.

Edwards is charged with 3rd Degree Burglary and 3rd Degree Theft. If convicted on both charges he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.

Edwards has two previous theft convictions out of Polk County.
