The state of Iowa has agreed to pay a $5 million settlement in a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics negligence case.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports the case involves a now seven-year-old girl from Cedar County. The girl had what was described as a “prolonged and difficult birth” and now suffers from “profound cerebral palsy” which prevents her from speaking, prevents her from feeding herself and gives her limited mobility.

The settlement includes a total of $750,000 for the girl herself and $4.25 million to the law firm which represented her. The payments to the girl will be made in $2,000 monthly installments until she turns 38, with an annual 3% increase.

The state appeal board also approved two other settlements on Wednesday totalling just over a half-million dollars.
