The North Liberty police and fire departments have responded to a pair of grass fires and an injury this week that officials say were caused by fireworks.

In a Wednesday news release, city officials remind residents that discharging any consumer fireworks is illegal in North Liberty. Even novelty fireworks and sparklers deemed legal can be harmful and often result in serious burns, hearing loss and other injuries. Fire concerns are compounded this year due to the abundance of dry conditions.

City officials say those who use consumer fireworks in North Liberty will be subject to criminal prosecution. People discharging illegal fireworks can be cited and, if damage or injury occurs, those responsible can be arrested and charged with arson, criminal mischief or assault, depending on the circumstances.

Residents are urged to speak with their neighbors about any fireworks complaints before calling the police. Additionally, reports can also be made to countywide dispatch at (319) 356-6800. Those who use fireworks without permits can face hundreds of dollars in fines.
