The city of Iowa City has hired a consulting firm to help determine the fate of City Park pool.

The city council unanimously agreed Tuesday night to pay Illinois-based Williams Associates Architects a maximum of $99,950 to determine if the pool should be repaired or completely replaced. The company’s findings will be presented to the council sometime in September.

Whichever option is chosen, repairing or replacing the pool would likely result in the facility being completely closed for the 2025 season.

Last year the council considered a $6 million plan that would have expanded the pool’s square footage, added a “lazy river” feature, reduced the amount of swimming lanes from nine to three and added more shaded space. That proposal was scrapped after the council was presented with over 800 signatures opposing the plan as well as concerns from the Iowa City Historic Preservation Commission.

The City Park pool first opened in 1949.
