A Coralville man who had been wanted on a domestic abuse incident from over ten years ago was picked up by police early Tuesday after an alleged OWI.

Police observed 38-year-old Ismael Nunez-Flores of 2nd Avenue driving at a slow pace and drifting in his lane as he was traveling eastbound on 5th Street.  When he was at the intersection of 12th Avenue and the Coralville Strip, he allegedly made a wide left turn, prompting a traffic stop.

Nunez-Flores reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of ingested alcohol. An open bottle of Heineken Beer was allegedly in plain view in the center cup holder.  After showing signs of impairment on field tests, Nunez-Flores provided a PBT showing him over the legal limit to drive.

A check of the man’s records showed an outstanding warrant stemming from an incident on August 3rd 2011. Officers were dispatched to Nunez-Flores’ apartment for reports of a domestic incident involving the mother of his child. According to  the victim, he hit her in the face and hit her with a beer bottle.  A witness said they heard the woman screaming for help outside the door.

A warrant was issued a week later for Nunez-Flores’ arrest, but he was never arrested until the OWI incident. He now faces the domestic assault charge, OWI first offense, and an open container violation. If convicted on the charges, Nunez-Flores could be sentenced to up to two years in jail.
