An Iowa City man had a nearly-dangerous level of intoxication when he was arrested last week.

Arrest records indicate area transient Joseph Lonier approached officers on the 100 block of East College Street June 3rd around 7:20pm as they were on a different call. He allegedly used racial slurs and was yelling.  Lonier was also reportedly carrying an open container of Four Loko.

The 34-year-old man had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. A post arrest breath test showed his blood-alcohol level at .396 percent. Various websites explaining levels of intoxication indicate that he was close to .40 percent, at which point most people lose consciousness and sometimes die.

Lonier was charged with Public Intoxication and an open container violation. A non-jury trial is set for July 9th.
