A kidnapping suspect is accused of attacking a fellow Johnson County Jail inmate with a broom.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says around 7:30 Wednesday morning 30-year-old Dewayne Corley-Jones of Gilbert Court struck the victim multiple times in the face and head with a broom, causing pain and redness.
Corley-Jones is in jail pending kidnapping, robbery, and other charges stemming from a December 12th incident in which he allegedly carjacked a woman at knifepoint and forced her to drive to a location on the Coralville Strip where she could get him money. Police say Corley-Jones drove away when the woman got out of the car, then successfully fled from pursuing officers.
Iowa City Police say later that day, Corley-Jones stole another woman’s vehicle at knifepoint and fled the state. He was arrested in Peoria County, Illinois after a pursuit ended with him crashing the vehicle and getting ejected.
If convicted on all counts involving both December incidents, Corley-Jones could be sentenced to up to 98 years in prison. He faces an additional one year in jail if convicted on an Assault Causing Bodily Injury charge stemming from Wednesday’s jail attack.
