An Iowa City man who just last week was arrested for being in possession of a firearm as a domestic abuser was arrested again after allegedly shoving the same victim into a wall Sunday night.
Police say 24-year-old Jason Rodas has prior domestic convictions involving the same victim, and he allegedly wanted to take their minor child from the residence while he was intoxicated. During the argument, which allegedly took place just before 9pm, the woman attempted to call 911 and was stopped by Rodas when he pushed the victim into a wall and took her phone.
The woman complained of pain on the left side of her face, and the child was in the residence during the incident.
Rodas was outside the residence when officers arrived. He reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech and had the odor of ingested alcohol. An open bottle of alcohol was allegedly observed inside the man’s vehicle that was nearby when police contacted him.
Earlier this month, police were in contact with 24-year-old Jason Rodas and his wife, who reportedly got into an altercation that eventually ended when Rodas left the residence.
Officers located a 20-gauge shotgun on the premises that the woman stated belonged to Rodas. A records check led police to the original purchaser of the firearm. He told authorities that Rodas had previously worked for him, but was unaware how his shotgun came into the man’s possession.
For Sunday’s incident, Rodas was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent offense; Obstruction of Emergency Communications and Public Intoxication. If convicted on those charges, Rodas could be sentenced to over five years in prison. He faces an additional five years if convicted on the weapons charge.
