An Iowa City man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman over a backpack.
The incident occurred Sunday evening in the parking lot of Liquor Downtown on South Gilbert Street. 30-year-old Gregory Echols reportedly got into an altercation with the woman over the backpack, and threw her to the ground. A witness reported that Echols was on top of the woman while she was on the ground. He allegedly grabbed the woman in the face, knocking a tooth loose in the process.
Authorities say that Echols and the woman have been in an intimate relationship for the past three years, and currently reside in the same tent.
Echols was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
