Iowa City Police have arrested a man they say was responsible for a shooting in the downtown area Saturday night.
The incident occurred at the Clock Tower parking ramp at approximately 11:45 pm Saturday. Responding officers say they located an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the sidewalk adjacent to the parking ramp on the Iowa Avenue side. Officers and first responders from the Iowa City Fire Department and Johnson County Ambulance Service provided aid to the man, who was transported to an area hospital to be treated for serious injuries.
The suspect was last seen fleeing the area on foot with several other people involved in an altercation preceding the shooting.
Investigators have identified 22-year-old Alexander Voudhivong of Pepper Drive as the shooter. They say he took possession of a firearm from another person and shortly thereafter used that firearm to shoot the victim without justification. Voudhivong allegedly left the scene and changed clothes nearby in an attempt to disguise his identity before leaving the area where the shooting occurred.
Several other pedestrians and bystanders were in the area at the time when Voudhivong began shooting. Casings reportedly struck windows on a nearby building, causing an estimated $500 in damage.
Voudhivong was taken into custody Monday afternoon. He faces a multitude of charges, including Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault while participating in a Felony, Going Armed with Intent, Reckless Use of a Firearm with Property Damage, and Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all counts, Voudhivong could be sentenced to over 32 years in prison.
One other person arrested at the scene of the shooting was 22-year-old University of Iowa student Isaac Walsh of Dubuque. Police say Walsh refused to leave the area when told and was carrying an open can of Busch Light. He was charged with Public Intoxication, Interference With Official Acts and Having an Open Container of Alcohol in Public.
