A new report from the National Bureau of Economic Research shows Iowa among the lowest states in retaining their college graduates.
The report from the non-profit shows Iowa having a net retention rate of negative 34%, ranking them in the bottom 10. By contrast, neighboring Nebraska has a negative 18 percent, Wisconsin at negative 20 percent, and Missouri negative 2 percent. Minnesota has a net gain of 7 percent, while Illinois is among the top states with a net gain of 20 percent.
Just last week, Governor Kim Reynolds touted an influx of residents as she defended controversial legislation passed in this year’s session. Census figures from July 2021 to 2022 showed net migration growth, citing international migration to the state. The figures showed Iowa’s domestic population dropped during the period.
A spokesperson for the University of Iowa told KCRG TV that they had a record four-year graduation rate this year, with about 5400 students graduating. Their data showed 95% of those getting degrees have either found a job, decided to continue their education, or aren’t seeking employment.
