Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds defended controversial legislation passed this year as she signed a bill earlier this week that would allow physician assistants to practice without a supervising doctor.
Previously, the governor signed a law limiting the amount of money Iowans can receive in medical malpractice lawsuits for pain and suffering.
The Des Moines Register reports Reynolds argued that an influx of residents shows Iowa is on the right path. She also cited a US News and World Report study that ranked Iowa as a Top 10 state to live. Reynolds said, “Our national profile is rising,” while adding she had no concern that recent legislation would make some see Iowa as a less-welcoming state.
Reynolds said that while Iowa has seen more people coming to live, nearby Illinois and Minnesota have seen their populations drop. The US Census Bureau noted that between July 2021 and July 2022, Iowa did see a net migration growth, but because of international migration. Domestically, Iowa’s population dropped.
