Police say they were alerted to 34-year-old Nicolas Garrett of Southgate Avenue  traveling by Trailways bus on his way to Iowa City, with the reporting party mentioning that he had active warrants. Authorities were also told that Garrett was in possession of a stolen handgun.

Garrett arrived Wednesday night with a black Nike duffel bag and walked to the 10 block of Clinton Street, where officers arrested him at approximately 9:40 pm.  He allegedly admitted ownership of the bag and its belongings. Garrett also reportedly said he knew there was a firearm in the bag.

The firearm, a loaded Smith and Wesson,  was checked out and reported stolen at the Calumet City Illinois Police Department.  Garrett reportedly provided the name of the gun owner and stated he was moving to Iowa City.

Garrett has been charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, Trafficking in Stolen Weapons, Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Domestic Abuser, and 3rd degree Theft.  If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 17 years in prison.
