A Coralville woman was taken into custody after a traffic stop reportedly revealed she was driving a stolen car.
The incident happened just after 12:30 am Wednesday. 47-year-old Tonya Wehrle was stopped on High Avenue in Oxford when a deputy ran the plates on a 2014 Honda she was driving. The plates came back as belonging to a 2004 Honda belonging to Wehrle. She allegedly admitted the plates were off her old Honda.
A check of the Vehicle Identification Number showed the 2014 Honda as stolen by the Olathe Kansas Police. Wehrle allegedly admitted buying the car from another person who had no title for the vehicle, so she used the old car’s title to make the registration appear current on it.
Wehrle reportedly took a bag out of the vehicle at the deputy’s request, and a container of a crystal-like substance was found. A further probable cause search of the entire vehicle turned up used needles.
Wehrle was arrested and charged with 1st degree Theft, Methamphetamine possession, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and fraudulent use of registration. If convicted on all counts, she could be sentenced to over 11 years in prison.
