University of Iowa Police are warning residents about an attempted murder suspect who is currently at-large.

The UI Department of Public Safety issued a statement on Saturday saying 19-year-old Ali Younes had cut off his ankle monitor. Younes is accused of attacking a woman and strangling her into unconsciousness on the Iowa Memorial Union footbridge in April of last year. While the woman was unconscious, Younes allegedly stole her earrings, which were valued at $20,000.

Younes, a UI student at the time, was arrested less than 24 hours after the incident and banned from campus. However, after a contested bond hearing, the court released him on several conditions, including a GPS monitor, and requirements that he surrender his passport and stay with his family on house arrest in O’Brien County, pending trial.

The Johnson County Attorney’s Office was notified Saturday that Younes had cut off his ankle monitor. Law enforcement officials have been unsuccessful in multiple attempts to locate him, and a warrant has been issued for his immediate arrest.

Younes had already been facing charges of Attempted Murder, 1st Degree Robbery and 1st Degree Theft. If convicted on all counts, he could spend up to sixty years in prison.

If you have any information about Younes’ whereabouts, please contact police immediately by calling 911. If you see Younes, DO NOT approach him.
