Laura Bergus announced today she is running for re-election to Iowa City’s city council. Bergus is in her fourth year on council, serving in an at-large seat.

In a release from her campaign, Bergus said she is proud of her track record on city council.

Bergus’ first term on city council started in 2020. She quickly faced the policy challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She supported Mayor Bruce Teague’s mask mandate, and collaborated with Johnson County to provide direct financial assistance to hard-hit families.

In addition to her council service, Bergus worked in the past for the City of Iowa City and the City of North Liberty, in communications. She volunteered for nine years on the council-appointed Telecommunications Commission for Iowa City.

After her local government career, Bergus attended law school at the University of Iowa. She has practiced law since 2011 and is an owner and managing partner at Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus, LLP in downtown Iowa City. She also is a mediator and practices collaborative law.

In addition to professional and public service, Bergus has a strong record of volunteering, having served on the boards of directors of several local nonprofits.
