The iconic view at Kinnick Stadium will be changing in the next few years.

The University of Iowa issued a news release Friday detailing construction at the school which will include removing the famous water tower that sits across Hawkins Drive from the northeast stands. The water tower, Hospital Parking Ramp 1, and the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center will all be removed and replaced with a new adult inpatient tower on the north side of the UI Hospitals & Clinics main campus. The old water tower is scheduled to be torn down in the spring of 2025.

Before that can happen, a new health sciences academic building will be built at the current site of South Quadrangle and the parking lot south of Slater Hall, adjacent to the Gerdin Athletic Learning Center. The new building will be the new home of the UI Communication Sciences and Disorders program, which is currently housed in the soon-to-be-demolished Wendell Johnson building on Hawkins Drive.

In September, the university’s utility partner, ENGIE North America, will begin construction on a new water tower northwest of the football practice fields. The water tower, which provides water storage for the entire campus, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. UI officials say the new tower will increase the amount of water storage for the campus.
