The Cedar Rapids Kernels will host a public ribbon cutting ceremony and open house this morning to celebrate the off season renovations to Veterans Memorial Stadium and the addition of The Annex. The event will take place in The Annex at 10:00 AM.
The program will begin with a welcome from Kernels Directors, City of Cedar Rapids officials including Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell, Minnesota Twins Director of Player Development Drew McPhail and contractors. Following the ribbon-cutting guests will be welcome to tour the renovations and light refreshments will be available.
The club confirmed the event will happen despite a weekend vandalism incident, leaving smashed windows and extensive damage to parts of the front offices and suites.
The Gazette reports 23-year-old Andrew Reynolds of Tiffin was arrested after being captured on video surveillance breaking into the stadium. He also reportedly posted a Snapchat video of him running the bases in the stadium at the time of the break in. That video was reported to Kernels staff, who identified him through their surveillance video. Police say he was wearing the same clothes as seen in the video when he was arrested.
Reynolds is charged with first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary. He could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted on both counts.
