A Coralville man faces drug charges after police reportedly found him asleep in his vehicle.

According to the arrest report, 47-year-old Charles Hipes of the Iowa Lodge apartments on the Coralville Strip was located on Oak Crest Hill Road Northeast Monday around 1:30 am. When questioned, he allegedly told officers that he had smoked marijuana earlier in the night and that there was also marijuana in the vehicle.

HIpes reportedly handed police a white container filled with marijuana. When officers told him they were going to conduct a probable cause search of the vehicle, he allegedly told them to just zip open a backpack in the vehicle to find the rest of the marijuana he had.

According to police, that backpack contained two bags containing nearly 600 grams of marijuana. Multiple plastic baggies were also reportedly located in the backpack, and Hipes told officers that the marijuana belonged to him.

Hipes was charged with a Controlled Substance violation, Failure to Affix Drug Stamp, and Marijuana possession. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to eleven years in prison.
