Iowa City Councilor John Thomas has announced that he will not seek reelection in November.

Thomas told the Press-Citizen he thinks he brought a fair amount of personal experience and sensibility to his time on the council, but that his personal life is going through changes and he wants to step back from civic involvement.

Thomas was part of what was dubbed the “Core Four,” elected in 2015 with councilors Pauline Taylor, Rockne Cole, and Mayor Jim Throgmorton. With Thomas stepping aside, Taylor would be the last of the Core Four still serving on the Council. She has not indicated whether she will run for reelection this fall.

Thomas represents District C, which covers north-central Iowa City. Council members Laura Bergus and Andrew Dunn previously confirmed they intend to run this year. Mayor Bruce Teague and council members Megan Alter and Shawn Harmsen are not up for reelection until 2025.
