An Iowa City man has been fined after police say he told his neighbor he was a police officer when confronting him about smoking marijuana.

A resident of the Cole’s manufactured housing community reported just before 9:00 Monday night that a subject was knocking at his door and claiming to be a police officer. The suspect was not wearing a uniform.

An investigation determined that one of the homeowner’s neighbors, 32-year-old Jonathan Lanuza, had claimed he smelled marijuana coming from the residence and started a countdown while demanding that the occupant open the door. The resident opened the door, but Lanuza was unable to produce a badge.

Arriving officers found Lanuza standing in the street while showing signs of intoxication. He was arrested for Public Intoxication.

Lanuza pleaded guilty on Tuesday and was fined $105.

Lanuza was sentenced to seven days in jail in 2021 after police say he threatened to shoot a witness who reported him driving drunk with a child in his car.
