An Iowa City man faces charges that he struck the mother of his child with a crib.
Iowa City Police were called to a domestic disturbance on Longfellow Court just before 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. The alleged victim reported that she and 46-year-old Abubakr Elkhangi had been arguing about how to care for their juvenile child, who was sick. The altercation reportedly escalated with Elkhangi allegedly shoving a children’s crib into the woman’s leg. He’s accused of then lifting the crib up and slamming it into her, striking her in the wrist.
The woman told investigators that she took the child to her car, but Elkhangi slapped her before removing the youth from the vehicle.
Police say they observed the damaged crib, and the woman reported pain from the two times she was struck with it. Elkhangi reportedly said he didn’t remember the details of the altercation.
Elkhangi is charged with Domestic Abuse Assault and Child Endangerment. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.
