Longtime West Branch High School football coach Butch Pedersen died Monday morning after a bettle with cancer.
The announcement came in a press release from West Branch Community School District Superintendent Marty Jimmerson, who said, “Over his 40 years as head football coach, Butch had an incredible impact on thousands of student-athletes. He had a reputation for never putting himself first, holding his players to high standards, and taking great pride in representing the West Branch community on the football field.”
The National Coach of the year in 2017, Pederson led West Branch to state titles in 1989, 1991 and 1992. He taught at all levels of the school district over the course of his career, and even continued to substitute teach in retirement.
Family members have asked that community members make a donation to a medical expense fund or memorial scholarship to honor the coach. Butch Pedersen was 73.
