Cedar Rapids police arrest suspect in February shooting

Cedar Rapids Police have made an arrest regarding a February shooting incident.

According to the CRPD, their Joint Communications Agency received an emergency call at approximately 4:32a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023; the caller reported shots fired at 3000 J St. SW.  Officers arrived on-scene and found two victims – one adult female and one adult male – suffering from gunshot wounds.  Both were treated on-scene and taken to local hospitals for further care.

As a result of the continuing investigation, 65-year-old James Sanford Jr. was arrested Thursday on an outstanding warrant.  He is now in the Linn County Jail and faces charges of  Attempted Murder, Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Domestic Assault with the Use of a Weapon, and Use of a Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime.

If convicted on all counts, Sanford could be sentenced to up to 39 years in prison.
