Iowa City’s south district has announced a new brand for the area.

The newly formed South of 6 Business District, a Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) in Iowa City, is throwing a launch party on Saturday, May 13th within the Pepperwood Plaza between 2pm-5pm.

Everyone is invited to the celebration, which will give the community an opportunity to explore businesses located in South of 6, learn about South of 6’s vision for the future, and celebrate the work being done with food, drinks, prizes, a ribbon cutting ceremony, live  entertainment, and activities for kids and families.

The “South of 6”name was developed this past fall with input from members of the district and Robyn Hepker of Benson & Hepker Design, who was engaged by the Board of Directors to be part of the team to co-create the new brand identity.

The district was launched as a 501(c)6 nonprofit last spring, and created as a tool for property owners and businesses to fund improvements and services to spur economic development & growth, enhance infrastructure & livability, provide advocacy & marketing, and create  events.

Executive Director Angie Jordan says the group sees South of 6 as a multicultural ecosystem that celebrates diversity and innovation to enhance the Iowa City experience as a whole.

South of 6 has identified three priorities to reach that goal.

The first, Feet-in-the-Street, hopes to increase traffic from surrounding neighborhoods to shop, work, play, study and live in the South District.

The second, Transformation of Space, wants to create and maintain signage, decorations & banners, art & entertainment, and events & initiatives.

The third, Business Unification, wants to create a collaborative culture among the current businesses,
recruit new business, and advocate at the city, county, state and national level to support economic development.
