An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly vandalizing over a dozen mopeds parked at Catlett Hall Sunday night.

According to police, 18-year-old Christian Behunin Simon was reported tipping over and damaging mopeds and motorcycles in the residence hall’s parking zone at around 9:45pm. Security footage allegedly shows Simon going from one vehicle to another, pushing them to the ground and at times sliding them on the concrete.

During the incident, Simon reportedly walked one of the mopeds northbound off the property. A witness reportedly saw him with the moped, and Simon walked it back to the parking area. He then took a second moped and went south. Simon allegedly ditched the moped and took off running when approached by Iowa City Police officers. He was apprehended and handcuffed after a short pursuit.

Simon reportedly advised the officers several times that he was intoxicated, as evidenced by his bloodshot watery eyes, and the strong odor of alcohol on his breath. A PBT confirmed he was intoxicated.

In all, 13 mopeds and motorcycles were damaged during the incident.

Simon was charged with two counts of 2nd degree Theft, along with 2nd degree Criminal Mischief, Interference with Official Acts, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on the charges, Simon could be sentenced to over 15 years in prison.
