The University of Iowa is gearing up for Severe Weather Awareness Week, which begins Monday.

UI Campus Safety will test the Hawk Alert system at approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday in conjunction with the National Weather Service (NWS) and Johnson County severe weather emergency notification drills.

The sirens will be activated, and registered users will receive test Hawk Alert messages. School officials say the process will help confirm that users can receive timely emergency notifications.

Although the university drill does not include the practice of seeking shelter, some campus facilities may opt to do a shelter drill. Regardless, public safety officials say you are strongly encouraged to pause and consider what actions you would take, including where you would go, if it were an actual tornado or applicable severe weather warning.

In the event of severe weather or other active emergencies on Wednesday, the drill and Hawk Alert test will be postponed and held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 30, or additional notification will be provided.
