Another suspect has been arrested on a warrant stemming from what Iowa City Police say was an unprovoked assault on two men last summer.

The incident occurred outside the L&M Mighty Shop East Burlington Street at 4:19am July 24th. According to the criminal complaint, 40-year-old Carvel Utley of Crescent Street and two co-defendants assaulted two males without any justification.

During the assault, one of the other two alleged assailants stole a firearm. Police say the victims did not fight back or throw punches, and were punched several times after being violently thrown to the ground.

A warrant was issued for Utley’s arrest on September 2nd; he was taken into custody early Wednesday morning. He’s been charged with Participating in a Riot, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.

The two other suspects in the case…24-year-old Arturio Henderson of Western Road and 26-year-old transient Ki’Won Clay…were charged in the case last year. Henderson was given a suspended sentence on a rioting charge, while Clay remains at-large after skipping a court appearance last December.
