Benton Street Rehabilitation Project to begin next month

The City of Iowa City begins much needed work on Benton Street next month.

According to a release from the City, the existing pavement on Benton Street requires frequent maintenance and is in poor condition, with joint deterioration becoming an increasing issue for much of the corridor.

Sidewalk facilities do exist along both sides of Benton Street, including curb ramps at most intersections. However, many of the curb ramps do not meet current ADA requirements.

The Benton Street Rehabilitation Project includes a crack and seal of the existing pavement with a Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) overlay; painting of on-street bike lanes, ADA sidewalk improvements at intersections; traffic and pedestrian signal improvements at the Benton and Sunset intersection, and miscellaneous Storm and Sanitary sewer improvements.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County allocated over $1.3 million in Surface Transportation Block Grant Program funding for the fiscal year 2021-24 Transportation Improvement Program.
