Iowa City Police say a man applying for a job at Hy-Vee shoplifted after filling out his application.

46-year-old transient Carl White was taken into custody earlier this week. According to arrest records, White applied for a job at the Waterfront Hy-Vee just after 10am on January 30th. After turning in the form, White allegedly selected a bottle of Mountain Dew, two bags of peanut M&M’s, and a cell phone charging cable. White paid for the Mountain Dew while allegedly hiding the other items in his pocket, then walked out without paying for the other merchandise. The total value of the stolen items is estimated at $24.77.

Hy-Vee security stopped White as he was leaving, although he reportedly refused to cooperate. He’s now charged with 5th Degree Theft, a simple misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 30 days in jail. A hearing is set for March 27th.

There is no word on whether or not White got the job.
