A man who police say intentionally exposed himself to staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on multiple occasions has been given a suspended sentence on charges that he robbed an Iowa City liquor store at knifepoint.
29-year-old Chad Fairchild of the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street was accused of robbing Hawkeye Smoke and Liquor on the corner of Clinton and College Streets last summer. He reached a plea deal in December, and on Monday Judge David Cox sentenced him to three years of probation, a ten-year suspended sentence and a suspended fine. Fairchild must also spend one year in a residential facility.
Last July Fairchild entered Hawkeye Smoke and Liquor and tried to steal a vape pen. When confronted by the clerk, Fairchild reportedly threatened the man with a knife. Police say Fairchild then lunged at the clerk with the knife while the man was calling the police.
Fairchild was initially charged with 1st Degree Robbery and Assault While Using or Displaying a Dangerous Weapon. Those charges were dropped as part of the plea deal, and Fairchild agreed on Monday to plead guilty to a lesser charge of 1st Degree Theft. If convicted on the originsal charges, Fairchild could have faced a maximum of 27 years in prison.
In June of 2022, Fairchild was sentenced to five days in jail for a May 2019 incident where he reportedly started masturbating in front of a staff nurse and nurses monitoring him on video at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. After being banned from the facility, Fairchild violated the ban the next month and was charged with Trespassing. He was fined $200 for that incident.
