Iowa City Police are warning of an email scam that tries to fool people into thinking they’re about to be charged for a subscription to a service they never purchased.

The scam came to the attention of the ICPD after an Iowa City business reported receiving an unsolicited email saying they had purchased a one-year subscription to The Geek Squad for $219.11. The email says to cancel the renewal, the customer must call a toll-free number listed in the email. A person answering that number then directs the caller to fill out a form that includes the victim’s banking information.

The reporting business told investigators that despite not filling out the entire form, they were still locked out of their computer.

The ICPD says to keep an eye out for such emails and be careful when clicking links.
