An area transient arrested for public intoxication continued to add to his possible sentence by striking an officer during the incident and bringing drugs into the county jail.

The incident occurred the evening of March 3rd at Shelter House, where 50-year-old Brett Ayers was arrested for being inebriated.  Ayers tensed up and tried to pull away from the arresting officer, continuing to do so while being searched.

Due to his level of intoxication, Ayers was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. While there, he reportedly became aggressive towards the officer and staff. Ayers was accused of kicking the officer in the lower part of his ballistic vest.

After evaluation, Ayers was transported to the Johnson County Jail. There, staff located a baggie of marijuana in his possession.

Ayers faces charges of Public Intoxication, Interference with Official Acts, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, and Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Institution. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over six years in prison.
