The citizens of Swisher have spoken, and they don’t want to pay for development of a public water system.
Results from the special election Tuesday showed voters overwhelmingly rejecting the proposal, by a margin of 84.7% to 15.8%. 476 people turned out to vote, which is over 72 percent of registered voters in the town.
This is the second time Swisher voters have rejected the proposal. In 1999, 72 percent voted no.
Most residents are served by private wells, some of which have shown to be contaminated. The city’s fire chief and mayor say they will still attempt to address the issues of fire response and contaminated water despite the vote.
The issue cannot come up for a vote again for another four years.
