An Iowa City woman was arrested for OWI Tuesday night after calling police on her boyfriend, who was trying to take her vehicle.

Police went to the Bittersweet Court residence of 30-year-old K’ierra Johnson after she reported a civil dispute. She told a 911 dispatcher that her boyfriend was trying to take her vehicle, and she didn’t want to fight.

Once officers arrived on scene, Johnson reportedly admitted to drinking during the day, and driving her van around town to various locations. She then allegedly said she had driven from Kum & Go to her residence, where she promptly called police. Johnson claimed that by then, she had not consumed any alcohol for over an hour.

The van’s engine and brakes were warm to the touch, and another witness reportedly identified Johnson as having driven the vehicle. Police say she was highly intoxicated, with bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, unsteady balance, and had the odor of ingested alcohol.

After showing signs of intoxication on field tests, she provided a Datamaster reading showing her blood/alcohol level at .153 percent.

Johnson was charged with her first OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
