Trial has been delayed for the husband of a former Coralville city councilor accused of sexually abusing a child.
64-year-old Jeff Dodds of 12th Avenue waived his right to a speedy trial on Friday. Judge Paul Miller granted Dodds’ request, and a new trial date has been set for July 18th.
Dodds, the husband of former Coralville city councilor Jill Dodds, has pleaded not guilty to three charges of 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse. According to the criminal complaints, the incidents occurred between June 1st and November 19th of 2021. Dodds, who co-owns Simple Abundance Child Care with his wife, is accused of committing sexual abuse on a child when she was in the couple’s care at their home address.
Jill Dodds later resigned from the city council, criticizing her fellow councilors, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the media during her resignation speech.
If convicted on all three charges, Jeff Dodds faces a maximum of 75 years in prison. A new case management conference is now set for May 19th.
